Sacramento’s first indoor mini golf course, Flatstick Pub, will be teaming up with Sacramento Self Help Housing in order to lift up Sacramento.

Each Sunday of January, Flatstick Pub will donate $1 for every beer and $1 for every round of mini golf purchased.

Sacramento Self-Help Housing is reimagining this year's Let Them Eat Cake Event. Due to COVID-19, we will be having our 21 year anniversary LTEC celebration both online and, on a limited basis, in person. Here what you need to know. On December 12, we will be hosting our 3rd annual Housewarming for the Homeless Donation Drive at Cal Expo. You can drop off donations at the Cal Expo Main Gate Loop from 8am - 1pm. Admittedly we were nervous about throwing a virtual event. Luckily, our volunteers, staff, and production crew pulled through with great success. Sacramento Self Help Housing collaborates with Project Sentinel, Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC), and California Apartment Association (CAA) to provide telephone counseling and dispute resolution services for Unincorporated Sacramento County, City of Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, and Citrus Heights residents.

The Tenant Advisors will deal directly with concerns regarding landlord-tenant disputes and help refer fair housing issues to the appropriate agency.

Sacramento Self-Help Housing is supporting those on the front lines working with our community's most vulnerable during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are helping to organize a stay at home, "Shelter-in-Place" fundraiser for our HART groups to raise much-needed emergency response funds to support their many projects. The fundraiser will be held on April 9th from 4:00pm - 8:00pm. The Shelter-in-Place fundraiser is simple. Grab a snack, call a friend, and donate to your favorite HART group! Each donation will go directly to their COVID-19 emergency response relief efforts. 1) Create sanitization stations for the homeless across Citrus Heights.

John takes time out of his duties to say hello to his unsheltered neighbors while running a respite center on cold Friday mornings. He is well known there and is affectionately known as “the Trinity guy”. 

John Craynak runs the midtown HART respite center at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. His mission? To create a comfortable place for people to come in and get information, get resources and relax. A Respite center is a place of relief where any community members can go to escape the elements and get refreshments. The respite center is open from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. every Friday. 

John has been a member of Midtown HART since it started a year ago and has ran the respite center since its opening during summer 2019. As a representative of the Trinity Cathedral, Craynak’s experience conducting different programs for the church, like their Wednesday night dinner program, is how he assumed responsibility as leader of the midtown respite. 

Additionally, Sacramento Steps Forward Navigator, Jenny Jordan, works at the Respite center to help house the unsheltered population in the area by getting them into shelters and housing programs. As navigator, Jenny finds homeless individuals to get them to the respite center so she can help them in their next steps to obtain sustainable housing.

Midtown HART accomplished one of its plans by opening another respite center at Saint Johns Lutheran church, located on 17^th and L Street.

Last Thursday was a BIG day for Sacramento Self Help Housing. Not only did we raise $5,000 in unrestricted funds, but we had the pleasure of opening our doors to 150 Sacramento Community members that wanted to learn about our agency. Thanks to all who attended and donated to our cause!

Let Them Eat Cake is SSHH's annual Bastille Day celebration and fundraiser. This year, we come together to celebrate the growth of our agency and the success of our programs. Housing services agencies like Sacramento Self-Help Housing talk a lot about the different "barriers" to permanent housing. Things like eviction history, criminal record, disability, and financial education often compound to prevent many of our clients from achieving the next step to recovering from homelessness. Sacramento Self-Help Housing would like to thank everyone that volunteered, donated, and supported us on our inaugural House Warming for the Homeless Winter Donation Drive! It was a SMASHING success. 

Every night, Sean begins his nighttime routine with the intent of, eventually, not needing to move his body off the bed and onto the floor in order to fall asleep.

On Christmas Eve Sean was hit by a car while crossing the street at a Walgreen’s storefront. He was headed to the store to pick up a Christmas card for his friend. After being discharged from the EMT, Sean slept on the ground in the Walgreens parking lot.

When the police were called to remove him from the parking lot the next morning, on Christmas morning, Sean enlisted their help and decided it was time he got off the street.  

When I met with Sean, last month, he had been staying in Mather Community Park for 3 months. He was visibly comfortable, confident, and thriving. “I couldn't have gotten off the street without Toni’s help. Her tenacity helped me get my life back together, and I couldn’t be more thankful.”  

Toni Morgan is the Citrus Heights Homeless Outreach Navigator. She met Sean at the Citrus Heights HART Winter Sanctuary.

“Sean just needed a little push. Whenever a client comes to me I give them homework, like applying for an ID or completing a resume. I ask them to make an effort. Sean responded very well to my program.” Says Morgan.

In February Sean moved into the Mather Community Campus. And is today celebrating 60 days sober. His plan is to stay at Mather until he can afford a car and finds a good job. We’re all confident he will be moving on, to a life of self-sufficiency and independent living soon.  

This Agency participates in the Sacramento Continuum of Care, Homeless Management Information System (HMIS), which collects basic information about consumers receiving services from this Agency. This data is collected in order to get a more accurate count of individuals and families who are homeless, and to identify the need for different services.

We only collect information that we consider to be appropriate. The collection and use of all personal information are guided by strict standards of confidentiality. A copy of our Privacy Notice Statement describing our privacy practice is available to all consumers upon request. Agencies participating in HMIS share information with local agencies partnered in HMIS unless they serve a protected population, in compliance with applicable federal and state law. The list of HMIS Partner Agencies is available to consumers at intake upon request. Sharing information among agencies allows those agencies to work in a cooperative manner to provide you with better services.

You have the right to refuse certain data answers to be entered into the HMIS database. As such, we request every consumer whom we serve to sign a “Consumers Informed Consent & Release of Information Authorization”. Although you will receive services if you refuse to provide data answers, your eligibility to receive some specialized services may be impacted by not participating in HMIS.

You do have the ability to share your personal information with other area agencies that participate in the network by completing a “Consumers Informed Consent & Release of Information Authorization” form. This will allow those agencies to work in a cooperative manner to provide you with efficient and effective services.

BDOG is a big day for SSHH because we are tackling the ever-expanding problem of homelessness and unaffordable housing head-on. In 2015, a minimum wage employee needed to work 86.5 hours per week, to afford a two-bedroom apartment in Sacramento. Since, as should be no surprise, the number of homeless in our community has increased by 30%.

The stats are staggering but should steer your focus to support organizations that are passionate, sustainably, and successfully providing a remedy, like Sacramento Self-Help Housing. 70-80% of those leaving the Sacramento jail system become homeless. We are looking to change this.

The Exodus Project is a housing program operated by SSHH in partnership with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and funded by the County of Sacramento, Department of Human Assistance. SSHH will operate three transitional houses for recently incarcerated members of the Sacramento County jail system. SSHH and St. Vincent de Paul Society will provide a holistic set of case management resources focused on human dignity, self-awareness, and achieving permanent housing.

The Exodus Project embraces the housing first model. Program participants live rent-free in transitional living situations. They are invited to stay 3-6 months to overcome their barriers to permanent housing. This typically takes the form of finding a steady source of income, meeting court-appointed assignments, attending physical and mental health appointments, and renewing their identifications. Program participants will work with Exodus mentors and SSHH specialists to get on track.

“Excluding formerly incarcerated people from safe and stable housing has devastating side effects: It can reduce access to healthcare services (including addiction and mental health treatment), make it harder to secure a job, and prevent formerly incarcerated people from accessing educational programs. Severe homelessness and housing insecurity destabilizes the entire reentry process.” - Prison Policy Project

Involvement in the Exodus Project is a sign of SSHH’s ambition to address the prison to streets pipeline. SSHH acknowledges this as an unmet need in the Sacramento Community. In the United States formerly incarcerated individuals are 10x times more likely to be homeless than the general public. Additionally, being homeless makes formerly incarcerated people more likely to be arrested and incarcerated again, thanks to policies that criminalize homelessness.
